Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are cookie cutters and what are they used for? Cookie cutters (also known as dough cutters) are molds or cutting tools used in baking and cooking to cut dough and other soft materials, such as fondant, into specific, uniform shapes.

2. How are cookie cutters made? We make our cookie cutters using 3D printers. 3D printing is a modern manufacturing process that builds solid objects from digital designs, layer by layer.

3. What materials are used to make the cookie cutters and stamps? We use PLA (polylactic acid), an environmentally friendly plastic made from natural materials such as corn and sugarcane. The PLA we use is certified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

4. Are 3D-printed cookie cutters safe for food contact? Yes, PLA is safe for short-term food contact. It can cut dough, fondant, cakes and other cold edible materials.

5. How should I clean and care for the cutters and stamps?

  • Washing: Wash only by hand with lukewarm water and soap. Do not wash in a dishwasher or use hot water (PLA will deform).

  • Seal cleaning: Soak the stamp in lukewarm water and use a very soft brush to remove residue from the indentations. Avoid sharp objects that may scratch the design.

  • Contact time: These tools are intended for brief contact with dough only.

  • Cling film method: For added convenience, place a piece of cling film between the cutter and the dough.

  • Replacement: Replace the cutter immediately if it becomes damaged.

6. Can I use the cutters and stamps in the oven or with hot materials? No. PLA has low heat resistance and starts to soften above 60°C. These tools are intended only for raw dough, cold fondant, sliced bread, and cakes.

7. How do I choose which cookie cutter size to buy? The initial size varies from design to design, depending on its shape and proportions.

For most of our designs:

  • the first size is roughly equivalent to a round cookie cutter with a diameter of 8 cm.,

  • the second size is roughly equivalent to a round cookie cutter with a diameter of 9 cm.,

  • while the third and largest size is roughly equivalent to a round cookie cutter with a diameter of 10 cm.

In some of our older designs, the original dimensions are smaller. In these cases, we recommend choosing the second available size, so the finished cutter has proportions similar to those of a round cutter measuring about 8 cm. This mainly applies to designs whose smallest available size is about 80 × 40 mm, 80 × 50 mm or 80 × 60 mm.

8. What size cookie cutter should I choose for cookies and other desserts? There is no right or wrong size — the choice depends on the dessert you want to create. Usually, the smallest and medium sizes are ideal for cookies, while the largest size It is suitable for cakes, pies, vasilopita (Greek New Year’s cake), and other desserts you would like to decorate.
